His father, Mehmet Tahir Efendi, one of the professors of Fatih Madrasa, came to Istanbul from the village of Shushise in the Ipek district of Albania, which was part of the Ottoman Empire, and his mother, Emine Cemile Hanım, was born in Samsun as the daughter of Mehmet Efendi from Buhara. Although Mehmet Tahir Efendi gave him the name Rağıf, which corresponds to 1290, the year he was born, by abjad calculation, he was called Akif by his circle. Apart from Akif, they also had a daughter named Nuriye. Mehmet Akif was born in the Nasuh District of Fatih's Sarıgüzel district in Istanbul.
