Three days later, a plutonium-type weapon with the code name Fat Man was dropped in the city of Nagasaki of the same country. There are two basic types of nuclear weapons. The first are fission bombs, which obtain energy by splitting the heavy atomic nuclei beyond uranium, as in the uranium bomb dropped on Hiroshima or the plutonium bomb on Nagasaki. In these weapons, fissile isotopes of heavy elements such as uranium and plutonium, when brought together over a certain weight limit called supercritical mass, enter into a chain reaction and produce a huge power. In the second type, called hydrogen bomb or fusion bomb, hydrogen nuclei are forced to combine (fusion) with a fission bomb that is ignited, thus resulting in a very high energy. While fission bombs have theoretical upper limits, fusion bombs do not have an upper limit on their power. The Federation of American Scientists estimates that as of 2012, there are a total of 17,000 nuclear warheads in the world, of which 4,300 are ready for use.
